2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show

and the Artist Formerly Known as Harry
When
you’re a 30-year-old comedian who’s a dead ringer for a 12-year-old wizard you
get used to seeing the
funny side of everything…
He’s doing a man’s job in a boy’s body in a man’s world.
Aaron Keeffe has carved a reputation as one of the most likeable comedians working on the Melbourne stand-up circuit, but he is still best known as ‘The Harry Potter Guy’.
At the 2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival he’s going to ditch that tag in style, and will be stepping out as: The Artist Formerly Known as Harry.
Aaron’s new show is an honest man’s big crack at showing everybody who he really is, and why looking 14 when you’re 30 and isn’t the fountain of youth it’s talked up to be!
Aaron Keeffe and the Artist Formerly Known As Harry is a revealing and endearing show about a comedian who wants his identity back!
Review from The Pun (by Ewan Gordon, 26 April, 2006) Have you ever been mistaken for somebody famous? Or perhaps someone thought that you were somebody you’re not. It’s annoying isn’t it? Now, imagine that person is a 12-year-old wizard from a children orientated movie. That’s going to annoy you more than somewhat. Well, that is exactly what Aaron Keeffe has had to put up with since the release of the first Harry Potter movie, with exponential growth in recognition with each additional movie. This notoriety is something he has attempted to cash in on, just like any other person alive would have done.
Aaron Keeffe and the Artist Formerly Known as Harry is Keeffe’s attempt to reclaim himself from the common misconception that his is, in fact, a fictitious student at a place that does not exist. Throughout his performance, Keeffe opens up to his audience, inviting them deep into his own personal life and that of his closest friends. Something that will surely get him into trouble one of these days.
Keeffe recently took part in the massive attempt to break the record for the world’s longest running comedy gig. He admits to staying up for roughly three days straight, which shows his dedication to his art and his lack of all common sense.
Appearing at the elegant Elephant and Wheelbarrow on Bourke Street, Keeffe’s enthusiasm and energy draws you into his performance in ways that have to be experienced. An utterly enjoyable and highly entertaining evening.
Just don’t call him Harry.
Review from The Funny Tonne (by Stephen Mathew, 25th April, 2006) Aaron you are a wiz. He uses the gimmick of being a Harry Potter lookalike - he milks it but doesn't flog it to death. This is only a part of his show. There is much more - observations and anecdotes (particularly about his travels to Malaysia and being the sole Aussie in the crowd at the Gaelic/AFL match when Chris Scott punched the crap out of one of the Irish) delivered in a polished manner. Once the audience got involved the show rolled along nicely.
